Responses and feedbacks of African dryland ecosystems to environmental changes

چکیده
Drylands occupy 43% of the African continent and play an important role in global carbon cycle supporting local livelihoods. Understanding how dryland ecosystems respond to environmental changes, both structurally functionally, is great significance for sustainable management. In this article, we review current remote sensing-based knowledge on ecosystem dynamics main drivers changes. Global CO2 enrichment, changes rainfall regimes, a decline fire activity have collectively driven vegetation greening, woody plant increase drylands over recent decades, challenging long-held desertification narrative. Here also highlight importance rainfall–vegetation–fire feedbacks enhancing resilience predicting future responses.

Ecological feedbacks. Termite mounds can increase the robustness of dryland ecosystems to climatic change.
Self-organized spatial vegetation patterning is widespread and has been described using models of scale-dependent feedback between plants and water on homogeneous substrates. As rainfall decreases, these models yield a characteristic sequence of patterns with increasingly sparse vegetation, followed by sudden collapse to desert. Thus, the final, spot-like pattern may provide early warning for s...
متن کاملOn soil moisture–vegetation feedbacks and their possible effects on the dynamics of dryland ecosystems
[1] Soil moisture is the environmental variable synthesizing the effect of climate, soil, and vegetation on the dynamics of water-limited ecosystems. Unlike abiotic factors (e.g., soil texture and rainfall regime), the control exerted by vegetation composition and structure on soil moisture variability remains poorly understood. A number of field studies in dryland landscapes have found higher ...

متن کاملCarbon sequestration in dryland ecosystems.
Drylands occupy 6.15 billion hectares (Bha) or 47.2% of the world's land area. Of this, 3.5 to 4.0 Bha (57%-65%) are either desertified or prone to desertification. Despite the low soil organic carbon (SOC) concentration, total SOC pool of soils of the drylands is 241 Pg (1 Pg = petagram = 10(15)g = 1 billion metric ton) or 15.5% of the world's total of 1550 Pg to 1-meter depth. Desertification...
